The Goat Who Ate the POA

Stories from the road

Most mobile notary appointments are routine. Documents are prepared, clients are ready, and the signing proceeds as planned.

Every once in a while, however, something completely unexpected happens.

One appointment at a rural farmhouse reminded me that even the best-planned signings can take an unusual turn.

One day, I was headed to a farmhouse to notarize a Power of Attorney and other estate planning documents. Everything appeared perfectly organized. The paperwork was ready, the clients were prepared, and it looked like it would be a smooth signing.

When I arrived, the couple came to the door to greet me. We spent a few minutes talking before heading inside. What none of us realized was that someone else had noticed the paperwork sitting on the table. By the time we returned, the family's goat had already reviewed the documents and apparently decided they were delicious. The Power of Attorney was shredded. The estate planning paperwork was scattered across the room.

We all stood there staring while the goat continued eating without a trace of remorse. Fortunately, documents can be reprinted, and after a little extra work, the signing was completed successfully. The experience was a reminder that even the most carefully planned appointments can take unexpected turns.

The goat may have won the first round, but the signing was completed, the documents were notarized, and everyone left with a story to tell.
